Livingstone Eland is larger body-wise than Cape Eland. Eland is the largest antelope in Africa and is classified by SCI as a spiral-horned species. These tan-coloured bovines normally have distinctive white stripes on the shoulder area. Both males and females have horns. The bulls are generally darker in colour with an enlarged dewlap and brush of hair on the forehead. Livingstone Eland can be hunted in the western, southern and central regions of Tanzania. The Eland in Masailand may look similar but is classified as Paterson’s Eland or East African Eland. Traditional Livingstone Eland hunts on foot can be one of the most taxing hunts as these animals cover great distances whilst feeding or in search of water. Tracking on foot can take hours so make sure you have plenty of water. Often these hunts start from a fresh track found on a road or natural salt lick. Livingstone Eland is classified as species of least concern by the IUCN and no special permits are required to hunt these magnificent beasts. A Tanzanian license must be pre-purchased before the hunt begins.
