Kudu is every first-time hunter's dream when visiting Africa. This spiral-horned antelope boasts the most magnificent and impressive pair of corkscrew-shaped horns. The males are significantly larger than the females which do not carry horns. They have tawny-brown-grey grey coats with distinctive white stripes running down their flanks and ears that look like small radar dishes. Kudu (Southern Greater Kudu) are found countrywide in Mozambique where suitable habitat prevails and poaching is under control. Kudu is a highly alert and crafty animal to hunt. Using their great hearing and eyesight, they let out a loud hoarse alarm bark before they take fright. When in full flight the bulls need to lay back their horns to avoid overhead obstructions and tree branches. Although they are so huge, they can be easily overlooked as a cunning Kudu will just stand dead still in the undergrowth and may wait for hours before moving. They are classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN and no special hunting permits are required other than a prearranged purchased license.
