Iran on map
Iran lies in Central Asia, between the Bays of Oman and Arabian Bay in the south and the Caspian Sea in the north. It borders Turkmenistan in the north-east, Afghanistan and Pakistan in the east, Iraq and Turkey in the west, and Armenia, and Azerbaijan in the north-west. The main hunting areas are located mostly in the mountain ranges on the borders of the country, and require several hours of travel by car or a connecting domestic from Tehran, where international flights land.

In the Persian language there are two words for hunting. Šekār, or shikar, means hunting in general, for whatever reason, whether for meat and skins or for entertainment. By contrast, naḵjīr means the hunt as a great endeavor, a display of exceptional skill. And for international hunters, a hunting trip to Iran meets the definition of naḵjīr. One of the world’s original sources of human civilisation, Persia (as the Greeks misnamed it), or the Islamic Republic of Iran, as it’s officially called now, features a wide diversity of landscapes and fauna. There are lush forests of the Caspian coast, and the dry deserts of the interior, where the graceful gazelles dwell. But most of the country is mountainous. And its seven varieties of wild sheep and two varieties of ibex that make Iran an irresistible magnet to any serious mountain hunter. Unfortunately, political tensions between the Islamic Republic and the West complicate travel to Iran. Although many hunting adventures in Iran have been completed without accidents, hunters are advised to research potential issues related to safety, travel bans, and sanctions, before planning a hunt in Iran.
