More about us
Our company was established in 1988 and operates in 2 territories.
- Deep Creek Outfitters has always ran our guiding business as a “quality over quantity” operation. When you book a hunt with Deep Creek Outfitters, you will likely be the only hunter in camp. This means that each client typically has multiple guides helping to fill the needs of each client.
- We also pride ourselves on offering great camp accommodations for every hunt. Our camps typically consist of travel trailers, wall tents, or backcountry camps depending on the clients wants and needs.
- When you book a hunt with Deep Creek Outfitters, you can be assured that we have scouted hard prior to the hunt to ensure the best chance of harvesting a quality animal. We spend many days in the field running trail cameras and glassing for big game.
- The bottom line is Deep Creek Outfitters is operated by guys who love to spend time in the mountains. We guide because we enjoy doing it and want to see our clients succeed, not because we need to do it to make a living. The number one priority of all of our guides is to give each client the hunt of a lifetime.
About this hunt
Southwest Desert is a draw-only hunt meaning you must apply for the hunt during the Utah big game application period (April-May) and draw the tag. No OTC tags are available for mule deer. The Southwest Desert unit has produced many giant bucks over the years. It is a general season unit so the state issues quite a few tags, but the potential is there to harvest a great mule deer buck. Deer numbers are pretty low in the Southwest Desert so you can expect to see only a handful of deer every day. However, there are some good quality bucks around. Terrain can vary from low desert sagebrush country to backcountry wilderness areas. Difficulty of the terrain ranges from mild to extreme depending on which part of the unit we are hunting. We are happy to accomodate to the clients wants/needs. Camps can vary from trailer camping to backcountry camps with horses or pack llamas. 2023 approximate points needing to draw. Each year these numbers seem to change quite a bit so 2024 may be similar odds are completely different: - Archery: 4 points - Muzzleloader: 4-5 points - Late Rifle: 5-6 points

Where you will hunt
Territory
In the southwestern corner of Utah, this is one of the largest deer units in the state and includes the Pine Valley Mountains and several other ranges. It is not managed to produce trophy-class bucks but has produced some great deer, including the former state record typical. The big rugged mountains in this unit provide great glassing points but also make it difficult to make a play on the deer. Scouting will be your best bet to locate, pattern, and harvest these deer. Low country can hold good deer also, but the vast pinyon-juniper forest can make it extremely difficult to see the deer long enough to have a chance.

Where you will stay
Pine Valley Hunting Camp
Camp accommodations can vary depending on the clients desire and needs. On hunts close to roads we typically have travel trailers and/or wall-tents and use trucks/ATV’s. Although these are “road hunts” we recommend being in good shape because a lot of hiking can be needed to avoid other hunters. We also try to utilize the horses to access remote areas whenever it is feasible. When hunting the backcountry, we use horse/mules/llamas to pack-in lightweight tents or wall tents. The backcountry hunts require a lot of hiking in steep terrain, so we recommend being in good physical condition to increase your odds of being successful.
