More about us
Our company was established in 1992 and operates in 1 territory.
- Why hunt with us, that's a good question. And rather than give you a song and dance, we promise to give you the straight skinny. So, here are the primary reasons we believe you should at least consider hunting with us.
- --We've been in business since 1992.
- --We're honest and straightforward and recognize we're not for everybody. If we don't have what you're looking for, we'll tell you.
- --There are no feeders or fences around here (not that there's anything wrong with that). But we hunt hard the old fashioned way and combine all the elements of still hunting, spot and stalk, stands, calling , etc.
- --There are no crowds in our area. We are the only outfitter in the concession. We rarely see another hunter during the day.
- --We are a small operator. As owners Joanne and I are still one hundred percent active in day to day operations. If you call, it's likely one of us will pick up.
- --Our guides are first and foremost great guys and terrific companions. They are local and very experienced hunters and guides.
- --This northwest corner of Montana is spectacularly beautiful. It's not typical big sky country. Instead, it's a place where the Pacific Northwest ecosystem crashes into the spine of the northern Rocky Mountains.
- We've been in business since 1992. We offer good, old fashioned hunts and have over 200 square miles of game rich habitat in our concession here on the Kootenai National Forest. We spot and stalk and still hunt and employ all facets of those two techniques including calling and the use of stands. hunt hard and employ all thelements and techniques involved
- In 1992 we incorporated our Company with the full realization that this business is ultimately about customer service. Sure we’re nuts for Montana upland bird hunting and chasing trophy whitetails and elk. We also know that impatient, cranky guides are intolerable and that you should never, ever have to deal with one. Period. We offer good, old fashioned hunts and we like to earn out trophies. all these years we’re confident with our day to day operations, always appreciate suggestions, and promise to give you 100%.
About this hunt
If you’re a fan of serious upland bird hunting, this is the hunt for you! This northwest corner of Montana consistently has good populations of what are referred to in the west as mountain grouse; ruffed, blue and spruce and LOC has over 200 square miles of hunting area permitted by the Kootenai National Forest. Hunt over our experienced English Setters and retrievers or bring your own dogs. Either way, there's nothing more exciting than watching good dog work and knocking down some of the most challenging birds in some of the most spectacular country you'll ever hunt! Blue Grouse: Blue grouse, the largest of the three species are found in good numbers throughout the area. They frequent subalpine terrain featuring open ridgetops with stands of conifers, and feed on a variety of insects, berries, and plants. They are slate gray and camouflage well against their rocky environment. Spruce Grouse: Spruce grouse are found in healthy numbers and frequent deeper woods, thick coniferous areas, and feed on insects, clover, berries, and evergreen needles. They are darker than blue grouse and sometimes appear blue-black. Spruce grouse, while not considered flyers, are a lovely bird and make an interesting addition to the trophy room. Ruffed grouse: Ruffed grouse, though populations are cyclical by nature, are found in great numbers. They inhabit logged areas with ten to thirty year old regrowth, coniferous forest edges, alder and aspen groves and creek bottoms. They feed on insects, clover, berries and other plants, are mottled brown or gray and are especially flyers. It has been said many times that ruffed grouse are the king of the upland birds, and we agree. To that end we devote most of time in pursuit of these fine birds. There’s nothing more satisfying than watching a dog flush or point a ruffed grouse and making a clean shot just before it disappears into the darkest cover.

Success rate
Game bird populations are subject to good habitat and the more habitat you have, the better the populations. Overall success rate could be considered 100%. That doesn't necessarily mean you'll get a limit of 3 birds per day. But the birds are here, our dogs will find them, and that's what really matters from a success rate point of view.
Where you will hunt
Territory
We are fortunate to have a huge game rich concession here in the extreme northwest corner of Montana permitted by the Kootenai National Forest. This area is not typical big sky country. Instead, it’s a place where the Pacific rainforest ecosystem crashes into the spine of the Rocky Mountain, a place of big, coniferous forests full of huge western larch, Douglas fir, cedars, lodgepole pines, ponderosa pines, and a place of tremendous biological diversity regarding both flora and fauna. This area is thick, green, lush, and every day smells like Christmas when you’re in the woods. To that end, we employ all aspects of traditional still hunting including spot and stalk, stands, calling, and stalking throughout a typical day.

Great people
Truly enjoyed the accommodations and the people are great. Encountered a lot if whitetail deer and the area is beautiful. The hiking was not overly difficult and it seemed that they had hunts for any level of fitness.
The down side is that Elk are hard to come by.
Everything was perfect!
Cabins were pristine and well stocked. The owners went above and beyond to make sure I didn’t need anything. My guide is the best of the best. I’ve booked a whitetail deer hunt and can’t wait.
Montana Mountains At Their Finest
Beautiful country. Sean was a very knowledgeable guide and worked his butt off to put Dad and I on game. They know the mountains in the Yaak, and how to interact with the game. They'll let you hunt in the style you want to.
Didn't fill a tag in the end, but that wasn't their fault. We saw game, our target game, had our chances, just turned into one of those weeks where the stars didn't all align. Still one of my most memorable hunts.
