Steenbok hunting in Tanzania {{ totalToursString }}
Steenbok (Steenbuck) is classified as a pygmy antelope by the Safari Club International Record Book. This graceful reddish-brown species is named from the Afrikaans word, steen, which means brick, a reference to its overall colour. They have long slender legs, large ears and a tiny tuft of a tail. Only the males have horns.
Steenbok can be hunted from Rungwa north through to Masailand. They are absent in the Selous and most of Western Tanzania.
Steenbok live in pairs and have well-defined territories which both the male and female will defend against trespassers. They are mixed feeders eating both forbs and grasses and are often found feeding along road verges and on freshly growing vegetation in burnt areas. When trying to avoid predators and hunters they will lie down with their ears flat before running off in a zig-zag fashion and may even hide in an Aardvark hole.
Classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN, no special hunting permits are required. A prearranged Tanzanian hunting license is required.
