Steenbok is a small reddish-brown coloured antelope. The word “steen” in Dutch (Afrikaans) is used to describe the colour of a brick.
Eight recognised subspecies occur in Africa and these are also divided by their two distinct geographical regions. The subspecies which occur in Botswana is the South African Steenbok.
Steenbok is a diurnal species that occur in pairs and both the males and females demarcate their territories by using dung heaps (middens) and scent-making. They rest up during the heat of the day and will often lie down with their ears flattened to their body to avoid detection from hunters.
