Side striped jackal hunting in South Africa {{ totalToursString }}
Side-striped Jackals are not that common in South Africa. The Southern Side-striped Jackal subspecies is a shy animal and seldom seen. They occur from Northern KwaZulu-Natal to the Lowveld region, including the Kruger National Park.
Side-striped Jackals are greyish-brown with a whitish stripe running along its flank and they have bushy tails. These nocturnal predators forage alone on carrion and small prey species like birds, rodents, hares and even eat fruit. Their call is a series of yelps and differs quite significantly from the howling Black-backed Jackals.
Side-striped Jackals are classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN and no special permits are required to hunt this species.
