Three species of Sandgrouse may be hunted, namely, Black-faced Sandgrouse, Chestnut-bellied Sandgrouse and Yellow-throated Sandgrouse. All three species are mainly fawn brown in colour to blend in with their surroundings. The main species' colour differentiations are on the head, throat and belly as the respective names would suggest. Sandgrouse can be hunted in the semi-arid areas of Tanzania. The Black-faced Sandgrouse are often found on bare ground and fly to find water and drink 1-4 hours after dawn and at dusk. The Chestnut-bellied Sandgrouse prefer cultivated fields and grassland and drink 2-3 hours after dawn. Yellow-throated Sandgrouse is the largest in Africa found in arid savannah grasslands and flies to drink water in the morning. The best Sandgrouse hunting is on the flight path to these drinking points. Sandgrouse is locally common. Classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN, no special hunting permits are required besides the standard Tanzanian hunting license which will be arranged by your outfitter.
