Sable hunting in Mozambique {{ totalToursString }}
Scientifically only one subspecies of Sable occurs in Mozambique, that being the Southern Sable or Harrisbuck. The latter name is no longer in use and was given to this majestic antelope after it was first described by Major Sir William Cornwallis Harris in 1838.
Sable Antelope are split into two subspecies by the SCI Record book. Any Sable hunted south of the Zambezi River in Mozambique is classified as Typical Sable. Sable hunted to the north of the Zambezi are classified as Roosevelt’s Sable Antelope.
The main difference between the two Sable subspecies is their horns and colouring. Roosevelt Sable has significantly shorter horns and the cows are noticeably redder.
Sable numbers are stable and they are listed as a species of least concern by the IUCN.
