Roan hunting in South Africa {{ totalToursString }}
Roan is one of Africa’s largest antelopes. It is closely related to the Sable Antelope. This thick-set animal, named after its distinctive colour, has a mule-like appearance with long pointed ears. The Roan is found predominantly in long grass habitats not utilised by other animals.
In South Africa, it is more of a specialty animal. Its popularity as a hunting species was originally hindered by its previously limited distribution and availability, along with a high trophy fee. Nonetheless, due to the successful game ranching programs, trophy prices are becoming more affordable and the Roan’s distribution more widespread throughout the country, predominantly in the more semi-arid areas of the Northern Cape, North West, Free State and Limpopo provinces.
They are however listed as a Threatened or Protected Species (TOPS) and a hunting permit must be pre-arranged by your Outfitter prior to your arrival for your hunt.
