Nyala hunting in Namibia {{ totalToursString }}
Nyala was originally named as an Angus Bushbuck after the English naturalist, George French Angas, who first described the Nyala in 1849. Nyalas are not indigenous to Namibia and were introduced to the country from South Africa. A good trophy has a long shaggy coat, lyre-shaped horns with heavy bases and outwards pointing ivory tips.
Nyala is mostly distributed in the areas northeast of Windhoek on private game ranches. These animals are highly water-dependent and some escapees from these game ranches have now established free-range populations in the southern Waterberg and well-watered areas north of Windhoek.
Nyalas have adapted well to some of these semi-arid regions but in many situations require artificial supplements to get them through the winter. Feeding these animals can be an expensive exercise in this dry country and thus the high trophy fees paid to hunt this species in Namibia.
Classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN, no special hunting permits are required.
