Niassa wildebeest hunting in South Africa {{ totalToursString }}
The Niassa (Nyasa) Wildebeest is a subspecies of the Blue Wildebeest (Gnu), distinguished by a distinctive white stripe across its muzzle. Like the Blue Wildebeest, it has dull-coloured stripes, originally earning it the name Brindled Gnu. Its horn configuration, mane, beard, and tail are all black, similar to the Blue Wildebeest.
Niassa Wildebeest can be hunted on a limited number of game ranches in South Africa. This subspecies of Wildebeest is not indigenous to South Africa but their numbers are being built up by selected breeding programmes from which limited numbers of animals are made available for trophy hunting.
These animals are typically hunted using the spot-and-stalk method and are known for being particularly tough to bring down, making it crucial to ensure your first shot counts. A good trophy can be identified if the inside of the curve of the horns extends beyond the ears.
Niassa Wildebeest is listed under the Common Wildebeest category by the IUCN and recorded as a species of least concern.
