Two species of Mountain Zebra occur in South Africa. Cape Mountain Zebra are an endemic species and Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra have been introduced from Namibia. These Zebra differ from the more common Burchell’s Zebra. They have no shadow stripes, the stripes do not cover the animal’s bellies and they have a brown facial patch above the muzzle and a small dewlap. Cape Mountain Zebra numbers have increased significantly over the past few decades and are now mostly hunted in the Western and Eastern Cape. Hartmann’s Zebra occur primarily on private land in the Northern Cape where introduced. Spot-and-stalk is the preferred hunting method for this species that favours rugged mountainous conditions making for tough walking conditions and even more difficult trophy recovery conditions. Mountain Zebra need to drink regularly and are often found in the vicinity of water. Cape Mountain Zebra has been delisted and is now classified by the IUCN as a species of least concern by CITES. A Threatened or Protected Species permit needs to be arranged by your outfitter before the start of your hunt.
