In Zambia, lions are threatened due to habitat loss. Two subspecies of African lion occur in Zambia, the Katangan Lion in the west and the Masai Lion in the east. Due to a change in policy by the US Fish and Wildlife Services (USFWS), lion trophy importations are now more difficult. Most Lions are hunted in the Luangwa Valley. The Lower Zambezi boasts one of the densest lion populations in the country, while other areas like South Luangwa, Bangweulu Swamps, and the Mulobezi Game Management Area claim to have the best-maned lions. Only adult male lions over 6 years may be hunted, and no lions may be hunted at night. The Zambian government strictly controls the number of days for a safari based on the species being hunted. Hunters should always ensure that they have the latest information regarding the most recent importation and exportation regulations before booking a hunt. Lion hunts need to be booked at least two years in advance due to their popularity and limited availability. CITES permits are required to hunt lions in Zambia.
