Jackal hunting in South Africa {{ totalToursString }}
Two Jackal species occur in South Africa, namely the Side Striped Jackal and the more common Black-backed Jackal. The Southern Side Striped Jackal is found from the northern KwaZulu-Natal coastal plains to the northeastern Lowveld around the Kruger National Park. Black-backed Jackals are found countrywide.
Jackal hunting is limited to Black-backed Jackals which are classified as agricultural pests and shot on sight by many game ranchers. Hunters may shoot a Jackal as a trophy of opportunity while out hunting during the day while many outfitters offer the opportunity to hunt Jackal at night when they are most active. They are also hunted as vermin and have become quite crafty in avoiding hunters in some areas. Callers can be a very effective way to entice a Jackal close enough to get s shot.
Jackals are classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN, no special hunting permits are required.
