Jackal hunting in Namibia {{ totalToursString }}
Two species of Jackals occur in Namibia. The Side Striped Jackal that only occurs in the Caprivi Strip (Zambezi Province) whilst the most common, the Black Backed Jackal occurs country wide even in the most harshest of conditions in the Namib Desert and Skeleton Coast.
The Southern Black Backed Jackal subspecies is also a problem animal in the sheep and goat farming regions of the country where hunters are encouraged to shoot these small carnivores on sight. Black Backed Jackals mostly feed on small rodents, insects, fruit and carrion but are quite capable of killing small animals like Sheep and Springbuck lambs. They are mostly nocturnal and live in pairs. The best hunting methods is to drive around using a spotlight soon after dark and they also react well to predator callers if predator callers have not been over used in the area. If using a caller, make sure you and the vehicle is well camouflaged.
Jackals are classified as species of least concern by the IUCN and no special hunting permits are required.
