About hunting in North West
Known as the Platinum Province due to the numerous platinum mines found in the region. The topography ranges from the remnants of the dry Kalahari Desert in the west, rolling Highveld plateaus in the south to Bushveld in the east. Its best known tourist attractions are the Sun City Casino/Resort and the “Big 5” Pilanesberg National Park established in an extinct volcano. The landscape varies from rolling open grasslands with scattered Camelthorn trees to the Magaliesberg Mountains, creating a mixed bag of habitats offering one of the greatest cross-sections of hunting species available in one single province. Dangerous game may be hunted on some of the larger game ranches in the region, while a wide assortment of plains game is offered across the region. This includes Gemsbuck, Springbuck, Kudu, Warthog, Limpopo Bushbuck and Klipspringer. What makes this a favoured hunting area is that both Highveld and Lowveld species can be found in close proximity to one another saving the hunter valuable hunting time to travel between areas where necessary. Not all game species can survive in the same habitat due to altitude preferences which affects the different habitat types, grass and tree species. In order to overcome some of these adaptability issues ranchers supplementary feed their game with a variety of hay types and mineral blocks during the dry winter months. This makes for fantastic bow hunting opportunities and many of the ranches have permanently set up built blinds. Those that do offer bow hunting in many instances, only allow bow hunting and no rifle hunting on their properties. This is in order for bowhunters to achieve a better success rate. Dangerous game species like Buffalo, Black and White Rhino can be hunted in the province. Some of the specials, like Sable, Roan, Red Lechwe and Tsessebe thrive in this area. An assortment of colour variant species can also be found in the province, this includes, White, Yellow and Saddleback Blesbok, Black, Copper and White Springbuck, Golden and Red Gemsbuck, Black and White-flanked Impala and an assortment of Wildebeest, including Black, Blue, Golden and Kings Wildebeest. If you are after the small predators you can hunt, Aardwolf, Caracal, Bat-eared Foxes, Brown Hyena and Jackals. Threatened or Protected Species (TOPS) and CITES permits are required for some species even with an exemption permit. All the necessary documentation details will be provided by your Outfitter.
