About hunting in Mauritius

The tiny tropical island of Mauritius, located in the Indian Ocean some 1,200 miles off the coast of Africa, is famous as a luxury resort destination, featuring white-sand beaches, palm trees, and stunning sapphire ocean waters. It is also well-known among wildlife enthusiasts, especially for its exotic birds and giant tortoises, and is gaining a reputation for excellent cuisine. But as more and more visitors are learning, Mauritius is also an outstanding hunting destination, home to a variety of game including the majestic Javan rusa deer, wild boars, pheasants, francolin, hares, partridge, guinea fowl, and pigeons. The island is a mixture of rugged mountains, rolling hills, thick jungle, and open fields, offering a variety of habitat where wildlife thrives. Both spot-and-stalk and stand hunting is effective for big game. Best of all, a hunt here is easy to combine with a luxury family vacation in one of the island’s five-star resorts.

Planning your trip

Visas

You don't need a visa to enter Mauritius if you are a citizen of the EU, the USA, Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand or a number of other countries. You can find more information on the Mauritius government website, www.govmu.org (click on “Visiting Mauritius”). Initial entry is granted for a maximum of three months and proof of a planned and paid-for departure is required. It is difficult to bring your own firearms into Mauritius, but the outfitters have guns for clients to use and gun rental is usually included in your hunt cost.

Upon arrival

Entry into Mauritius is easy and hassle-free; simply present your valid passport. English is the primary language and is spoken by most residents and officials.

Hunting

Both spot-and-stalk and driven hunts are common on Mauritius, depending on what you are hunting. For rusa deer, most hunting is conducted by spot-and-stalk, although high seats and blinds are also used. The terrain consists of forest edges, swamps, rivers, and dense jungle. Most hunters are successful on stag in two days or less, and a small-game or bird hunt is often included or added.

After the hunt

Taxidermy

Trophy preparation is generally included in the hunt cost and your outfitter should be able to arrange most documents required for trophy export.
