Hippo hunting in Tanzania {{ totalToursString }}
Hippo, Africa’s most dangerous animal is responsible for more human deaths than any other animal. They may look clumsy on land with a body like a tank and short stubby legs but unmatched in their aquatic habitat. Most attacks on humans occur at night when the animals have exited the water to feed on land.
Hippos are found in some of the larger rivers and swampy areas of the country. They are mostly hunted in the Selous, Rungwa and the Moyowosi River and swamps of Western Tanzania.
Hippos make for great Lion baits. Being large in size, they can be quartered and hung as bait off the ground higher than what Hyenas can reach. The Lions will need to stand on their hind legs to reach the carcass and the tough hide will ensure that the meat will not easily be picked off the bones before the hunters enter the blind early in the morning to see what scene awaits them.
Hippos are classified as vulnerable by the IUCN and do not require any special hunting permits. Hippos may only be hunted on a minimum of a 21 day hunting license in Tanzania.
