Helmeted guineafowl hunting in Namibia {{ totalToursString }}
Helmeted Guineafowl throughout the savannahs of Namibia. Their numbers increase from west to east and the further north you go as the country’s rainfall increases.
Helmeted Guineafowl are named after the bony horn-like looking casque on their head. A blueish black chicken size bird with white speckled spots and a blue head with red facial skin makes it very easy to identify. They are extremely powerful fast flying birds.
Helmeted Guineafowl feed on insects, bulbs, seeds and berries. They breed well during good rainfall years when there is ample grass cover to hide their nests. Their ground nests are often raided by small predators like jackals, mongooses and genet cats.
Listed as a species of least concern by the IUCN.
