Two hartebeest subspecies occur in South Africa. The more prolific and widespread hunted species is the Red or Cape Hartebeest whilst Lichtenstein's Hartebeest was originally only found in the northeast of the country and still occurs in its natural environment in the northern Kruger National Park. Red Hartebeest is found in small herds ranging from 10 to 20 animals with one dominant bull. Trophy quality is good throughout the country where these animals occur and are not over-hunted. They are generally inquisitive animals and may run off a short distance before stopping and turning around to look back which may give you an opportunity to take a second shot. Lichenstein's Hartebeest is more commonly hunted north of South Africa as these animals are only found on a select few games ranches scattered across the country where their numbers have reached a stage where trophy animals may now be hunted. Both species are classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN, no special hunting permits are required.
