Where to hunt Gemsbuck
Gemsbuck, a.k.a. Gemsbok, a.k.a South African Oryx is the native of the Kalahari Desert. Gemsbuck range covers Namibia, Botswana, South Africa, and parts of Zimbabwe. This animal is well adapted to deserts and dry steppes, and does not depend on waterholes, being able to extract the necessary water from plants (including melons and watermelons). A free ranging population exists in New Mexico, USA, and some outfitters offer hunts for them on private land.
Price distribution
The most affordable opportunity to hunt Gemsbuck are management/cull hunts in Namibia, that may cost about $1,000. Gemsbuck is a good target for a management hunt, because both sexes carry horns, and cow trophies are as impressive as the bulls. For a trophy hunt, budget from $1,500 to $5,000, a part of which will go towards shooting fee ($600 and up), and the rest – for daily rates and other trophies (few people travel all the way to Africa to hunt just one species). Fully guided Oryx hunts on the ‘off-range’ private land in New Mexico, USA, typically cost $4,000-$6,000.

17 Aug 2017 All said and done: What’s the bottom line for an average South African hunt? When to hunt Gemsbuck?
Gemsbuck hunting opportunities exist a year round. In New Mexico the season runs from October to February. In Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe the best time for hunting is May to September, when colder temperatures make long walk-and-stalk hunts less excruciating. But some South African outfitters insist it’s better to hunt in November – April, when flourishing vegetation of the bush makes it easier to approach the animal.
