The majority of Gazelle species and subspecies are to be found in North Africa. There are nine species of Gazelle in Africa of which two can be hunted in Tanzania. In the Grant's Gazelle category you find two subspecies, the most commonly hunted Southern Grant's Gazelle and Robert's Gazelle. The Southern Grant's is readily hunted in central Tanzania and is a Masailand Special and the lesser known Robert's Gazelle is hunted in Northern Tanzania. The main difference between the two being their horn shape. The former has has the longest horns and are lyrate in shape and more widely spread than the Robert's that has diverging horns that bend downwards at the tips. The more well know Thompson's (Tommie) and most common Gazelle in Africa and hunted as a Masailand special. There are two subspecies in the country that look very similar and are separated geographically and by their facial colouration. Those hunted in Masailand East are the Kilimanjaro Thomson's Gazelle and those in the west are the Black Snouted or Serengeti Thompson's Gazelle. Classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN. Both species can be hunted on a 10-day hunting license.
