Where to hunt Fallow Deer

Fallow deer originated in south-west Asia, and from there has been introduced by people almost all over the world. It’s a near perfect “park deer” species – beautiful to behold, easily adapting to people, and not quite so damaging to forestry as other deer species. Escapees from deer parks formed free-ranging populations, and the species is popular with game ranchers and game farmers all over the world. You can hunt fallow deer across Europe, in the USA and Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, and even South Africa.

Price distribution

The most affordable fallow deer hunts are cull or management type hunts. They start at about $200, and are a perfect opportunity to experience the classic European hunts without paying a small fortune. European outfitters typically charge a daily rate and a trophy fee over it, which is sometimes calculated by a complex formula and may run into many thousand dollars. However, you can find a flat fee trophy fallow deer hunt in the neighborhood of $3,000 or thereabouts, especially in the New World. The most expensive fallow deer hunts are package deals that include trophies of a number of other species, such as red deer, tahr, blackbuck, etc.

When to hunt Fallow Deer?

As a game park or game ranch animal, fallow deer can be hunted pretty much a year round. Wild fallow deer populations in Europe are typically hunted in September to December and January. Early autumn is usually the best time to hunt a fallow deer (in the southern hemisphere, that would be March to July).

The most popular way of hunting fallow deer is spot-and-stalk. Hunters are usually accompanied by a guide or gamekeeper, who will not only show where the game is, and how to stalk it, but estimate the trophy size. The hunter and the guide walk quietly around the area, trying to locate animals and approach them. Fallow deer can be very active in daytime where they aren’t too disturbed by humans, which helps things. Calling can also be used during the rut. Hunting from high seats, driven hunts, and hunting with dogs are also practiced.

Why hunt Fallow Deer?

Fallow deer owe their survival as a species to humans. Most of their immediate relatives, including the Irish Elk, died out, but humans introduced fallow deer to the Mediterranean as early as in Neolith (obviously not just to look at them), and have been preserving them ever since. In fact, fallow deer numbers today are so high, they do a lot of damage to the very parks they are supposed to decorate. Since it’s not a very good idea to reintroduce big predators into densely populated European countries, fallow deer herds need to be managed – which is another word for “hunted”. Cull and management hunts are a good way to introduce beginners into the sport – and fill the freezer with delicious, healthy and organic meat. Walking quietly through forests and fields in the morning mist, looking out for the graceful silhouettes of the animals is a classic European experience, and the unusually palmated antlers of fallow deer will make a lasting memory of the chase.
