Eland is Africa’s biggest antelope. They are as big as a Brahma bull and the darker more mature bulls have a very impressive dewlap. The younger tawny coloured bulls have longer horns than the older bulls who often show much more character with their worn down horns and a brush of hair on their foreheads. Two species of Eland occur in Tanzania and are difficult to tell apart other than their geographical distribution. The East African Eland, also known as Patterson’ Eland are more rufous in colour and have distinct vertical white stripes along their bodies as opposed to Livingstone Eland. These colour variations are difficult to determine with older bulls. Livingstone Eland is the recognised species occurring in the south of the country and extends through much of the Selous. Patterson’s Eland is found in the northern concessions of Masailand and Maswa. Eland hunted in Rungwa, Kizigo and Western Tanzania are probably Livingstone Eland. In order to prevent any confusion, SCI recognises all Eland hunted in Tanzania as East African Eland. Classified as species of least concern by the IUCN, no special export permits are required. A minimum of a 21 day hunting license must be pre purchased prior to starting your hunting safari.
