Where to hunt East African Bush Duiker

Duikers are found throughout sub-Saharan Africa and the East African Bush Duiker refers to the Common or Grey Duiker which has been listed as a regional species in the SCI Record Book. It is found in numerous East African countries, ranging from Kenya (cannot be hunted), Sudan, Congo, Somalia, Burundi, Rwanda and may be hunted in Uganda. However, the majority of East African Bush Duikers are hunted in Tanzania.

Price distribution

In Tanzania, the East African Bush Duiker can be hunted on a 16 – 21 day license. The daily rates for these safaris range from $1650 - 1950 per day. Trophy fees for East African Bush Duiker are $450-500. It is unlikely that any hunter would go to these countries to just shoot a Duiker making these animals more of a trophy of opportunity. The daily rates quoted in these cases exclude anti-poaching and community development fees which are listed amongst the extras.

When to hunt East African Bush Duiker?

The Ugandan and Tanzanian hunting seasons run from 1 July to 31 December. However, the Tanzanian hunting season has been extended after the Covid pandemic lockdown experienced in 2020. Whether this is a temporary or permanent arrangement that remains to be seen. The best months for hunting East African Bush Duikers are the dry months of August to October when the vegetation is sparse making for better visibility hunting conditions.

Hunting methods All hunting methods (9)

East African Bush Duikers are primarily nocturnal feeders and best hunted at dawn and dusk. They can be found anywhere even close to human settlements and waterholes. Always be alert when hunting as a Duiker may present an opportunity at any time during the day. They normally rest up during the day and will jump up and bound off when disturbed. The best hunts are early morning before they find their resting spot for the day. Fortunately, they enjoy a good drink and as a bowhunter sitting in a blind you are always in with a chance.

Why hunt East African Bush Duiker?

Duikers derive their name from the Afrikaans (Dutch) word for ‘diver’. The Duikers must be the most challenging group of animals to hunt. Of the 22 Duiker species, 17 are huntable. The East African Bush Duiker may be one of the biggest and easiest Duikers to hunt. If you specifically decide to target a Duiker, you must realise that it could take quite a few attempts before you may be successful. They make interesting full mounts, shoulder mounts, pedestal and European (skull) shield mounts.
