Brown hyena hunting in Namibia {{ totalToursString }}
Brown Hyenas are mostly nocturnal scavengers. Numerous documentaries on Brown Hyenas have been filmed along the Namibian Coast. Part of this fascinating documentary called “Standwolf” (meaning beach wolf in Afrikaans) was filmed along the Skeleton Coast of Namibia, a name given to the region by the many stranded shipwrecked seamen who were known to have died in this hostile desert terrain.
Brown Hyena, although only found in low densities, are one of the few mammal species found in the western deserts of the country. Predominantly a scavenger, they feed on anything from bird eggs, wild fruit to abandoned carcasses killed by other predators. Occasionally they kill small animals like seal pups.
Brown Hyenas can be hunted throughout the northern, southern and central regions. This species is listed by the IUCN as near threatened and may be hunted on a Namibian predator license but cannot be exported to the USA.
