Baboon hunting in Ethiopia 3 hunts
Four species of Baboons can be found in Ethiopia. As with all Baboons, their diet is omnivorous and they need to drink regularly, so always found near water. Two of the species, the Gelada and Hamadryas Baboons are easily identifiable whilst the Olive and Yellow baboons look very similar except for a slight colouration difference.
The Gelada Baboon, also known as the bleeding-heart monkey. It derives this name from a very distinguishing bright patch of skin on its chest. Adult males also have a heavy cape of brown hair on their backs. These baboons are located in the northwestern region of the country.
Hamadryas Baboons occur in the central and northern areas of the country and their sexual dimorphism is very noticeable. The males are much larger than the females. Adult males are silver-white with a very pronounced cape.
Olive Baboons are named after their green-grey colouration and are the most common Baboon species in the country. Their distribution ranges across the western, central and southern regions of the country.
Yellow Baboons occur in the southeastern regions of the country. They have slender bodies and are yellowish-brown in colour.
CITES permits are required for the import and export of Baboons to control the international trade in primates. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) also have special import regulations for the importation of Baboon trophies into the USA.
