Southern impala hunting in Mozambique {{ totalToursString }}
Only one species of Impala occurs in Mozambique. This group of antelope is then further divided into two subspecies, the Johnston’s Impala found north of the Zambezi and the Southern Impala found south of the Zambezi.
Southern Impala takes its name from its southerly distribution and was first described in 1812. This golden-brown medium to small size antelope is common where they are found. The Southern Impala does not occur along the eastern coastal belt of Mozambique and is found in the savannahs to the west.
Only the male Impala have lyre-shaped horns. These antelope form large herds during the breeding season and nursery groups during the lambing season.
Impala is listed as a species of least concern by the IUCN.
