Sable is without doubt the most regal and majestic animal available for hunting in Africa. With their jet black coats, black and white face masks and long curved horns. Every hunter aspires to having one in their collection. Sable prefers long grass habitats and marshy areas. In Tanzania you find two sub species listed in the SCI record book. The Common Sable occurs in the western areas (Moyowosi) of the country while the Roosevelt Sable occurs in the southern (Selous) and central (Kizigo and Rungwa) regions of the country. A Sable’s horns may be used as a most dangerous weapon making them a most fearsome animal that can keep any predator at bay. They are also renowned as a difficult animal to bring down, so make that first shot count. Unfortunately their meat cannot be exported but is rated as probably the best venison in Africa. Sable is classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN, no special import or export permits are required. Sable may only be hunted with a minimum of a 21 day hunting license in Tanzania.
