Olive Baboons are also called Anubis Baboons. This is the most widely distributed Baboon species in Africa. They look very similar to their southern cousins, however, their common name is derived from the colour of their coat, which is a shade of green-grey when seen from a distance. Olive Baboons may only be hunted in the northwestern regions of Tanzania. Olive Baboons spend their nights sleeping on cliffs or high trees to avoid nocturnal predators like Leopards. They are diurnal animals spending most of their day on the ground and never far from water. They are a matriarchal society with a strictly organised hierarchy and they communicate amongst each other using mostly grunts, screams and barks when alarmed. Baboons can store food in their cheek pouches and indulge in social activities like grooming. CITES permits are required for the import and export of Baboons to control the international trade in primates. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) also have special import regulations for the importation of Baboon trophies into the USA.
