Niassa Wildebeest, sometimes spelt as Nyasa is also known as Nyasaland of Johnston’s Wildebeest. They are one of six subspecies of Blue Wildebeest found in Africa.
Two subspecies of Blue Wildebeest are found in Mozambique. The Southern Blue Wildebeest occurs south of the Zambezi River and the Niassa Wildebeest to the north. The Niassa Wildebeest is easily identifiable by the white bar across the bridge of the animal’s muzzle.
Furthermore, in Mozambique, Niassa Wildebeest are mostly hunted in an area of the country with the same name, namely, Nyasaland. Both males and females have horns and a good trophy will have horns longer than the animal’s outstretched ear.
