Two species of Kudu occur in Tanzania, the Greater and the Lesser Kudu. Of the five Greater Kudu subspecies, two occur in Tanzania, this being the most commonly found East African Greater Kudu and the Southern Greater Kudu, which marginally occurs along the Mozambican border. The East African Greater Kudu has impressive spiral horns and is usually on every hunter to Africa bucket list. The name Kudu was derived from the Khoikhoi (indigenous people) who were hunter-gatherers and the name is still used today. The Southern Lesser Kudu is related to the Greater Kudu but as the name suggests, is significantly smaller. They are less than half the size of a normal Kudu with a prominent white throat, prominent white stripes and a mini set of spiral horns. These animals are hunted as one of the Masailand specials. Greater Kudu is classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN and the Lesser Kudu as Near Threatened. Both can be hunted in Tanzania on a 21-day Tanzanian hunting license.
