What you need to know

  • 1. Planning your trip
  • 2. Upon arrival
  • 3. Hunting
  • 4. After the hunt

Planning your trip

Estonia is part of the Eurozone, so citizens of the EU, USA, New Zealand, Canada, and Australia do not need a visa. You’ll want to plan ahead and work with your outfitter to supply the details of any firearms you are bringing so the import permit can be prepared ahead of time.

Upon arrival

Tallinn Airport is serviced by airlines from most major European cities. It is part of the Eurozone, so citizens of the EU, USA, New Zealand, Canada, and Australia do not need a visa. As in most European countries, upon arrival hunters must declare their guns and show a temporary import permit, which the outfitter can arrange. This will include the hunter’s name, passport number, and details of the gun(s), including caliber and serial number. The hunter will also be required to show a valid hunting license from his or her home country, a gun permit or U.S. Customs 4457 form.

Hunting

Estonia has large areas of evergreen forests. Moose are very popular to hunt, and most are hunted from high seats or by calling during the rut and using dogs. Wild boars, hunted via driven shoots and over bait, are very plentiful. European lynx can be hunted with tracking dogs in winter, similar to the way mountain lions are hunted in the western United States, and capercaillie and black grouse are also plentiful. Red deer, roe deer, foxes, European brown bear, and wolves are also found here. Goose hunting is also outstanding.

After the hunt

Trophy export

Upon request, the outfitter should be able to arrange most documents required for trophy export, and in many cases the cleaned and dried horns and skins can be taken home immediately by the hunter.
