Common Reedbuck (Southern Reedbuck) is the largest of the Reedbuck species. This medium-sized antelope has a light-brown silky coat and in many ways similar in colour and habits to a White-tailed Deer. Instead of antlers, these animals have heavily rigged forward curving horns. A rubbery tissue is found at the base of the horns making it unique from any other African species of antelope. Common Reedbuck can be hunted throughout the country from the savanna grasslands bordering the Kruger National Park with South Africa to the coastal grasslands, as well as the country's many flood plains and deltas. Although not very dependent on water, Reedbuck prefer to lie up in grasslands during the day and graze mainly at night. These nocturnal animals are best hunted early morning or late afternoon when they break cover to start feeding. When threatened, they remain motionless or retreat slowly into cover. They will lie concealed until the very last second before jumping up and running away from danger flashing their white tails whilst making a whistling alarm call. Apart from their trophy value, Common Reedbuck are a sought after venison and rated as one of the finest wild game meats in the country. Prearranged hunting licenses are required to hunt a Common Reedbuck in Mozambique. They are classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN and no special hunting permits are required.
