As recently as 2007, Bushbuck was divided into as many as 23 subspecies. Today only 9 subspecies are recognised of which three occur in Tanzania. The two main species hunted in the country are the Masai, Mweru or East African Bushbuck and the Chobe Bushbuck. The Somali Bushbuck, also known as the Eastern Coastal or Cumming's Striped Bushbuck occurs along the northern coastline. However, SCI only recognises the first two species. This is a widespread species across sub-Saharan Africa excluding the Central African jungles and the dry desert and semi-arid regions of Southern Africa. The Masai Bushbuck is mostly hunted in Masailand but occurs from Central Tanzania all the way north to the Kenyan border and the Chobe bushbuck is hunted from Central Tanzania south to the Mozambican and Zambia borders. This species derived its name from its preferred habitat of dense bush and forest. Natural colour variances occur within localised populations sometimes making identification exceptionally difficult. Bushbuck are classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN and can be hunted on a 16-day license.
