Black wildebeest hunting in South Africa {{ totalToursString }}
Endemic to South Africa, often referred to as the “clown of the plains” as they have a habit of running in circles. This species was brought back from the brink of extinction by South Africa’s game ranchers and conservation authorities. They are a dark brown colour with both sexes carrying unusual U-shaped forward curving horns, hairy nose and white horse-like tail, hence the alternate name of White-tailed Gnu.
Easy to find but difficult to hunt in the open Highveld grasslands where cover is limited. Although they are found across the central plateau that dominates the country, the place to hunt them is in the Free State and North West Provinces.
Bulls appear much larger at a distance, are very territorial and can be extremely dangerous when wounded. Classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN. However a Threatened or Protected Species (TOPS) permit must be arranged with the South African Provincial Nature Conservation authority through your Outfitter.
