Two Baboon species occur in Tanzania, the more common Yellow Baboon and the Olive Baboon (Anubis Baboon). Both species are very similar to their more recognisable southern cousins, the Chacma Baboon. Their names are derived from the colour of the colouring of their coats. Both species' heads and faces have dog-like features and huge canine teeth. There is some discrepancy about which species you would be hunting in Tanzania. According to the IUCN distribution maps, you would actually be hunting the Yellow Baboon throughout most of Tanzania. Olive Baboons only occur in the far northwestern parts of the country. Baboons sleep in high trees or cliffs to avoid nocturnal predators. During the day they spend their time scouring the countryside looking for food which includes, flowers, fruit and seeds. They even search under rocks for insects and scorpions to eat. They are always found in the proximity of water. Baboons have a strict matriarchal society and communicate mostly by grunting and barking when alarmed. CITES permits are required for the import and export of Baboons to control the international trade in primates. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) also have special import regulations for the importation of Baboon trophies into the USA.
